1794 – More than 200 years ago Jacob Holm founded the company now known as Jacob Holm & Sønner A/S.
One of the industries he started was rope production, which came naturally due to his enormous interests in shipping and shipbuilding. In those days the production of rope was scattered within the guild and not carried out in a very professional way. Jacob Holm succeeded in rationalizing the “industry” and built a significant manufacturing unit to serve this area in all its aspects.
In 1893, the rope factory was extended with the introduction of two spinning works, producing saddle-making thread, linen strands, saw cords, sisal strands and clothes lines. Export volumes of these items to Northern Europe were considerable.
Later, additional departments were added. A hard fiber department manufactured manila, sisal and coir for binder-twine and rope. The company introduced a soft fiber department, which prepared jute, flax and hemp for a wide range of products including parcel-strings, cord rope and yarns for the textile industry. The steel cable department made wire and hawsers for ships, while the dyeing and bleaching department added a coloring capacity – after treatment nowadays – for natural fibers and threads.
